The soft-format code for Series 60 phones is *#7370# . You enter this code as you would enter a phone number in the Phone application. It performs a format of the Internal drive – All data will be lost if you use this feature.
The method of performing a hard-format, i.e resetting it completely to factory defaults and removing all data, is as follows:
- Switch off the phone.
- Hold down the following three buttons: Green (call answer) button, * button, and ‘3′ button
- While holding these buttons, press the power button and switch on the phone
- When the message ‘Formatting’ appears on the screen, release all of the buttons
Note that you shouldn’t switch the phone off or remove the battery when performing either of these operations, and it’s advised that the handset has a reasonable amount of battery charge before performing a format/reset. As data will be lost, you are advised to perform a backup first

The reset info is brilliant. My N91 kept on freezing and required the battery to be removed and restarted; sometimes freezing as many as 10 times a day!..could not however figure out what was causing it….an earlier comment about freeing RAM ….no where in the manual to show you how to do that…everything seems to refer to only the hard drive…any suggestions there? i make a soft and a hard reset. delete files on many places, install a taskmanager, tryed to kill the only processes left, “music” and “standby” but that are “system” things, so cant be stoped.
im really pissed

I took a contract over 12 months with this phone and how sorry i am. O2 reps blew me off until i signed up…LOL…NOW !! they don’t give a shite cos they have my money coming in + more. My NOKIA N91 has a ghost inside that contacts MOBILE WEB service every month running my bill up even more, gotta pay it even if you a’nt used it….Good job i got my phone insured cos i lost my N91 “NEXT WEEK” lol…….don’t get one!!!!

every time i log onto mxit with n 91 it askes me to allow application mxit to use network to send and receive data. after i say yes it then askes me to sellect an access piont. im in and out of application all day. is this the only nokia that do’s this or is there a way around it. would like to sellect icon and go straight in. As far as i know, the Data on your phone will be erased, your HD wont be erased untill you format it. Seems like a file system error that your songs got lost. But the missing contacts are the evidence of the fact that only phone memory is erased =D

Hey Guys, please find below the common reasons why ppl cant use the N91 properly. After upgrading the phone to the new version, I have found that there are no issues. The phone does not hang or restart now.
When the software takes a lot of time to update, I suggest that the computer should have atleast 512MB RAM and a very good internet speed. Else, it wil take a lot of time and even your phone may hang.
If the hard disk is not available after you have upgraded the phone, please reset the phone to factory defaults. This will work. But please remember that when you upgrade the phone, all the data of the phone is lost.

I’ve having a litlle problem with my n91-1. My hardisk is working fine for a while (2-4 days),then sudenly files on hard end up coruptable an i must format drive.After that is ok (for couple days)and then the same old shit.I have newest firmware.Could be posible that my hard is corupted?Scan didn’t find any bad sectors.Can i do full format with pc?

I`m facing a problem with hard drive, first I installed some damn app “oggplayer” on my HARD DRIVE! then try to remove but no way! ((I read that never install apps on hard drive for the first time)) but after tring to remove… no way. I found that when I remove the battery cover all open apps on hard drive + hard drive shut down immediatly.
the problem accured when I want to use the phone as MASS STORAGE device. it says that because of some open aplication,hard drive is in use. so I have to remove the app how?will phone firmware flash work by usb? A hard format + hard reset?

Now You can reset your n91 hard drive easily if your “hard drive is not available” switch off your mobile replace your back cover and switch on than go to menu and open “Tutorial” after that put your back cover now you go back to tools open your “hard drive” option now you can see the format option check it really works……….. don’t forgot to say thanks to me…

I have purchased N91-4GB here in Nepal 6 months ago. I have a problem on my mobile that when I connect to USB port it shows “connect via”- “Mass Storage/Media Player / PC Suite” But any of three doesnot support or connect to my PC. I have tried more than 10 computers with different USB cables. But the problem is still same.
I even formatted both Phone Memory (*#7380#) and Harddrive (using tools>Harddrive>format>Quick/Full Erase.

Wow, that trick really works, thanks for insisting on it in this forum. It sounds like Vodoo, doesn’t make any technical sense, but it worked for me:
1. Switch off the phone

My other problem which started all this, was also that my phone got stuck in the Nokia start up loop. Taking the battery out did not help this time. But removing the SIM card made it accessable. At which point the harddrive didn’t work and I had to use the above mentioned Vodoo…

i have my n91-1, the 4 Gig one..i ignore start up failed one time because when i turn my phone back on, it was fine..but now its showing start up failed contact retailer again,..i did the hard reset and the color turned to the default color but once its shows me to type the password it automatically goes back to start up failed contact retailer and it will stay there until i remove the battery.. pls help me…this phone is crappy! damn! i wish i could have waited for the other phones w/o this crappy hard drive! pls pls pls help me……

once i pasted a 700mb film in my nokia n91 cell,and i have deleted the stuff.But when i records the stuuf with the camera and try to see in my PC.The problem is that after the video gets fineshed the video of the film gets started in between which i have deleted earlier.Even though the stuff has been deleted it gets started when i see the recording in my PC.

Here is the solution(we do not have to use any of box or sofeware):
1. Normally i will turn on the phone and press *#7370# to restore to factory setting first.
2. TAKE OFF BACK COVER. reboot phone by holding the (pen-key), the phone will boot as safemode. (it looks no different from normal mode)
3. go to Tool->harddisk (now you will still see “harddisk is not available”)
4. PUT BACK COVER ON (do this slowly). then the phone will work very slow BUT THE PHONE IS NOT HUNG.
5. you have to be patient, and press option key, and wait for phone responds, it normally takes from 2mins to 5 mins (some phones responds fast, some phones responds slower, depands how it reads harddisk)
6. after option menu comes up, choose harddisk to format (formatting takes about 15 mins or more, be patient, wait until it finish, after formatting harddisk, every thing will work ok again)
note: after put your backcover back, each key you press, phone will respond very slow, because it’s reading harddisk, but THE PHONE IS NOT HUNG

Cannot access the HDD
Cause:
- Battery cover not in place
- Magnet missing from battery cover
- Damaged HDD
- Corrupt data on HDD
- Poor interconnect between HDD and PWB
HDD Corrupt
Cause:
- Data installed from factory, that was corrupted
- Applications installed on the HDD by user, not compatible
S60 applications that are not version 3.0 (previous versions) are not compatible with N91.
- Application install process to the HDD by user, that are not compatible
If an application was copied from another device to a PC and then onto the
HDD via mass storage, this will corrupt the HDD. Applications that worked in non-S60 3.0 devices will not work in the N91 or other S60 3.0 devices
because of binary incompatability. Example: an application that works in a N70 or 6630 will not work in the N91 or N71. If an application was
downloaded from the MMC of these devices and transferred (drag and Drop)
into the N91, this would corrupt the HDD and the HDD would have to be
formatted to function again.
The N91, on startup, will see applications that were copied from the PC to
the HDD. It will try to install these applications; this will lock the HDD and
not allow access. This problem, with early sw (version 1.0), was only able to be repaired by formatting the HDD with Phoenix, because the USB connection could not access the HDD.
Also, if the customer took a backup of a corrupted HDD image, when they
restore this image to the device it will have the same fault.
If an application was interrupted when it was being installed on the HDD by
a power cycle. Applications have to be allowed to install uninterrupted

SMS, MMS, Themes, and some applications if they are loaded onto the HDD, will cause slow access times. All these items should be loaded onto the devices internal memory and not the HDD.
Quick Test tips
If the device will not boot:
- Restart the device with the battery cover removed
If the device boots then there is a HDD issue.
If the device boots but can not see the HDD
- Make sure the battery cover is in place.
- Check that there is a magnet in the B-Cover
Use a metal object (a paper clip works) and see if it sticks to the lower
right side of the device (opposite to the USB connector)
If it does not stick replace the b-cover with a good b-cover. Retest.
Testing
There are different tools available to test and repair the HDD. They are available from the User Interface (UI), through the “Mass Storage” USB selection when connected to a PC and through Phoenix test software. Depending on the level of corruption on the device, this will limit which
tools can be used. If the HDD is not accessible through the UI or the PC, then the last chance to format the HDD is through Phoenix

i m alpesh patel . I hav Nokia N91 and when i insert fully charged battery in it , it will starts to heat up n in 1 to 2 hrs battery will be consumed n mobile becomes hot . Its not a battery problem because i tried 2 to 3 batteries in it . it is still becoming hot . i consulted a person n he checked my mobile . he says tat network ic is heating up and we hav to change it.

I took out the battery of my N91 : b4 switching it off and then keypad stoped working i have tried hard reset, safemode nothing seems to be working except on/off key.
i can play music with my head set bcos of controls on it but nothing more pls help.

yaar mera keepad ka koi bhi botton nahi chal raha hai sirf switch off ka botton hi chal raha hai aur koi bhi botton nahi chal raha hai agar iska solution kisi ke pass hai to plz give me a sollution can mail me on id or ill give it to repair but agar keepad khula to jaldi kisi se band bhi to nahi hota hai plz rpy

I am having problem with the charging of my N 91. Whenever i try to charge, it damages the battrey, the battrey swells up and becomes useless thereafter, i have lost my 5 battreys in this process untill now, i dont know whats wrong with the phone…. Please HELP
